John has been playing banjo for about sixteen years. It was whilst working in the U.S.A that led him to learn the banjo from a top banjo player. John worked near Charlotte in North Carolina back in 1991, when he bought a banjo from the late Garland Shuping (The Bluegrass Alliance, Jim & Jesse McReynolds and Garlands own band Wild Country) from Rockwell N.Carolina. John had lessons from Garland until he returned to the U.K in 1992.

John has played with various bands throughout the 1990's including Norwich based Country Rock band Caravan Club. He then played in a Bluegrass/ American folk band called Bluebilly which was a band that formed from a regular session at a pub called The Billy Blue Light in Norwich.

The most recent bands John plays in are The Ugly Dog Skiffle Combo who play a mixture of Rockabilly,Country and Bluegrass music. He also has his own project which is  called Buntlinespecial ,who play standard bluegrass songs with only banjo, guitar, bass and drums.

John Plays a 1978 Gretch Ode model D, which he says it is a wonderful instrument. He is also very happy to be involved with Hayley Moyses And The Bluegrass Forum!
